People Do Business with People They Like!

Sounds simple but we often forget just how true this is. We give our allegiance and our repeat business to those who make us feel good...feel valued...feel appreciated. Or in simple terms, people we like.

A good part of my business is Executive Coaching. That is spending one on one time with someone to help them improve their skills or work on a particular challenge. I was recently asked this question, "How do you get someone to like you?" It made me think just what it was that did.

Here are a few of the basics:
-Someone that truly takes time to listen to you.
-Someone that engages with you by asking you questions (preferably open ended) and then listens rather than doing all the talking themselves. (I'm sure we've all met the person that no matter what you start to say they jump in and have a bigger better example or personal story! This is not good for engaging. It is just tooting one's own horn!)
-A genuine person - not focused on outward values but inward ones that are long lasting.
-A warm welcoming smile that says I really want to help you or serve you.
-Someone that remembers the little things. ( I marvel at the woman that cuts my hair and how she comments on the smallest life event that I shared on my previous visit.)
-Someone that makes an effort to form a common interest.
-Good follow up coupled with warmth and service excellence.
-Going the extra mile in service or caring.
-Being a friend versus being a salesperson! Cultivate the relationship. The sale will often follow.
-Some people just have a magnetic aura about them where others want to be around them. I'm convinced this comes from deep inside with a huge heart and desire to be kind to others.

People will forget what you say and what you do but always remember how you made them feel!
