Leaders Know what they are trying to Accomplish!
Yes that’s right. A true leader knows where they are going and how they plan to get there. Not only do they have a clear vision in mind of their desired destination but they paint a vivid picture for all of those around them to follow. In so doing, they use descriptive words that help their followers see the end result. They give examples from other companies and share success stories for best practices. True leaders do all they can to help others see clearly the direction they hope to go.
Leaders find effective strategies. Strategy is something that a true leader refines everyday… one battle or challenge at a time. They are constantly learning and adding flexibility to their approach. Whether the best way to accomplish the goal is to stick to the plan there are times that we need to be prepared to fly by the seat of our pants. To be true to themselves a leader must incorporate their own values and core beliefs to be able to lead with confidence.
Leaders are also great communicators. They communicate with confidence and they find ways to connect with the audience. They use common language and a simple style and approach coupled with humor when appropriate so that the audience relates to both them and their message.
Leaders are effective listeners. Being able to articulate your message and communicate it so others receive it is only half of the equation. An effective leader listens even more intently. As Steven Covey so aptly says, “it is better to understand than be understood”. This comes from listening. If you want to know how your company is running or your team members are reacting, ask good questions and be an even better listener.
A good leader is also a trusted advisor. Others around them feel comfortable seeking their advice because a leader has created a forum and atmosphere that creates comfort and trust. They do so by solving problems, and anticipating challenges before they arise. They walk the talk of leadership in all they do.
A true leader is inspirational. This is one skill that cannot be forgotten. One of my favorite quotes is “if you lead and no one follows you are simply taking a walk” by John C. Maxwell. Leaders get their team involved. Participants feel valued. They appreciate all their leader offers. Great leaders have passion and commitment and inspire others to join in their purpose. They reward high performance and take time to listen to all participants. They inspire self-confidence in others. Unless you inspire others to act you are simply a team of one. The more you can inspire others the better leader you are. As Jack Welsh says “if you pick the right people, give them to opportunity to spread their wings and put compensation as a carrier behind them, you almost don’t have to manage them.”
Leaders can be found most anywhere in the organization. It is those that model the desired behavior and have the innate talent to inspire others that can aspire to be a leader.
